Hansen's Sno-Bliz

About

"There are no shortcuts to quality." Since 1939! Open Tues-Sun 1-7 pm, Closed Mondays. Yes we cater!

Story

Hansen's Sno-Bliz was first conceived during one typically hot New Orleans summer day during the Great Depression. Ernest Hansen and his older son were trying to cool off outside when a man pushing a snoball cart wheeled by. Ernest, although tempted by the frozen treat, disapproved of the lack of cleanliness of the operation as each snoball was shaved by hand from a large block of ice. Being a master machinist, he envisioned a machine that would hold and shave ice cleanly and safely. Ernest promptly set about building one, earning U.S. Patent 2525923.

His wife, Mary Hansen, a shrewd businesswoman and fantastic Italian cook, created her own line of syrups. In 1939 Hansen's Sno-Bliz began serving its first snoballs under a Chinaball tree on the sidewalk outside of Mary's mother's house on St. Ann Street. Back then, a snoball was 2 cents, an exorbitant price for the time, and was served in a little cardboard tray. After a short time on Valmont Street, they moved to Hansen's current location on Tchoupitoulas Street in 1944.

Over the years Hansen's became a New Orleans tradition. People would bring their children in for their first snoball, and years later those children would bring their children. Fraternities and sororities would often order large trashcan sized Sno-Bliz for their parties. Hansen's has often been listed among the top (if not the top) dessert restaurants in New Orleans.

In September 2005, just a few weeks after evacuating for Hurricane Katrina, Mary passed away at age 95. Ernest died the following March at age 94.

Hansen's Sno-Bliz is now run by Ernest and Mary's granddaughter, Ashley Hansen, who helped her grandparents run the shop since she was 12. She says she plans on continuing in the tradition of her grandparents by serving snoballs to generations of New Orleans families.

Very nice small family owned business. The line was long but worth the wait. 5 different sizes and lots of flavors to choose from. You can split the flavors and have two. Lots of toppings to choose from also. Prices are very reasonable.

My wife and I love snow balls, and so when we came to New Orleans we knew we had to try Hansen's. Unfortunately, I do not think it's all that special. The first time we we went, I got their Vanilla Bean flavor. It wasn't all that good. Pretty light flavor in general. Still tastey, however. The second time we went to Hansen's I asked them for Fresh Mint over Watermelon which was being advertised front and center over by the cash register. They informed me that they didn't have that. So I ordered their Cream of Strawberry. I headed to the cash register and I told them they might want to remove the Fresh Mint flavor sign until they have it. I was then told they were making it now that I told them but that it takes 20 minutes to make, so he was going to leave it up. After trying their Cream of Strawberry, I didn't really enjoy it. It didn't taste like strawberry at all. More like bubble gum. Overall, the place is expensive, has specific business hours, and the flavors are not all that special. On top of all of that, their menu is extremely confusing. There's many flavors listed in an unorganized fashion all over the place, but how much it is going to cost is any one's guessing game.

The Cadillac of snoballs!!! It doesn't matter how hot it is or how long the line, DO IT! You won't regret it, because no one else can make it like Hanson's. They really shave the ice to pack like snow, & the syrups are delicious and home made, not corn syrup & red #500. Prices are so reasonable, & they take credit cards now! Easy parking in the neighborhood.

I was skeptical that it would be as good as people say. Okay it's that good. The staff is very helpful. I got the almond cream with strawberries on top and my wife got strawberry cream with strawberries on top. The dessert is not overly sweet but sweet enough and also refreshing. I would recommend this stop you won't be disappointed. 👍

It's absolutely the best around by far. If you don't agree then you haven't tried. Many people in New Orleans are faithful to other snowball places and I understand that but this place is light years ahead of all the others, including Imperial Woodpecker, Pandora, Sals, and Plum Street. Once you try, you will understand and then compare all snowballs to this one. I recommend the Satsuma or Watermelon. The ice is perfect almost the consistency of ice cream due to the perfect cut that comes out of the machine created by Earnest Hansen. The flavors are not too sweet like the other places, they are just right and taste exactly like the best version of the chosen flavor. The only drawback is the dang line is so long and hard to wait in especially since I now have younger, impatient kids. I've tried to go to the other places with shorter lines only to be disappointed. In closing, maybe don't try it if you're used to other places because your snowball life will be ruined forever. If you insist on going, go during off times on weekdays, or when it's raining- then it's not as busy.
